The Jimmie Johnson dynasty in the NASCAR Sprint Cup series stretched to half a decade at Homestead-Miami Speedway Sunday as the most dominant driver the sport has ever seen won his fifth straight championship with a second-place finish in the Ford 400 season finale.

As Carl Edwards motored to his second straight victory in as many weeks, leading 190 laps, Johnson fought back from early pit problems, settled into his regular routine and came on at the end to seal the title.

For Edwards, the two consecutive victories came after a 70-race winless streak.

"This is unreal," Edwards said in victory lane. "It's a great way to finish the season. I think the way we're going, if we can start like that, our Aflac team will have a shot at them next year.

"To finish like this is unreal. It's just these guys not giving up. We don't give up. We've had just an unbelievable run toward the end of this season. It's just a great way to end the season."

The championship battle was a nail-biting contest whose complexion changed time and time again throughout the 267-lap event.

Continuing a long-standing series tradition, the ARCA Racing Series will open its schedule at Daytona International Speedway in 2011. The Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200, consisting of 80 laps on the historic 2.5-mile superspeedway oval, will air live on SPEED at 4 p.m. Eastern on Saturday, February 12.

The race will be the 48th for ARCA at Daytona, which has hosted the series’ season opener every year since the first visit by ARCA in 1964. The ARCA Racing Series will mark its 59th year of competition in 2011.

The Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200 will precede Saturday night’s feature race, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Budweiser Shootout. The ARCA event is the first in an appealing weekend which also includes pole qualifying for the Daytona 500 the next day.

On-track activity begins with practice Thursday, February 10 and continues with Menards Pole Qualifying presented by Ansell on Friday, February 11. Start times will be announced shortly. Television coverage of the Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200 will begin at 4 p.m. Saturday with the green flag set to fly at 4:30.

“We race on the same day, at the same track, just a couple of hours before the Bud Shootout, which is the first race for the NASCAR Sprint Cup tour. It’s a great opportunity for us. It’s a great platform. The race is always televised live on SPEED, and annually draws the greatest field of entrants, the greatest number of paid admissions, and the highest TV ratings,” said ARCA president Ron Drager.

Nine-time series champion Frank Kimmel will be in search of his first ARCA victory at Daytona after finishing third in 2001 and 2002 and second in 2004 and 2005. Bobby Gerhart, the all-time ARCA victory leader at Daytona with six, is expected to enter in defense of his win in 2010.

Seven drivers have won from the pole in the Daytona ARCA 200. Gerhart accomplished the feat twice, in 2005 and 2006, and was preceded by Andy Hillenburg (1997), Jeff Purvis (1993), Woody Fisher (1977), Iggy Katona (1974), Andy Hampton (1972), and Benny Parsons (1969). Gerhart is the only driver with wins in consecutive years (2005, 2006, 2007).

The remainder of the diverse 2011 ARCA Racing Series schedule will be released in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, the thrilling 2010 campaign will close Saturday, December 4, with the series’ Championship Awards Banquet at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center in Covington, Ky., near Cincinnati.

Don’t call the silly season over just yet, as the rumor mill has begun to churn away on Anglo-American John Hopkins. Finishing 10th in the AMA American Superbike Championship, Hopper had a mixed season with the M4 Suzuki squad, missing several races because of a wrist surgery. Now finally on the mend, Hopkins is being linked to the Crescent racing team in the UK, which is headed by former Rizla Suzuki MotoGP boss Paul Denning, ...

We know it’s a cryptic headline, but there’s a big HUGE move happening today in India as far as motorcycles are concerned, and we couldn’t help being overly dramatic. Holding a 26% stake in Hero Honda, Honda announced that it will be selling its position in Indian joint-venture, the world’s largest two-wheel manufacturer, to the Hero Group’s founders, the Munjal family, and various investment funds. Honda in turn will be pumping its resources into its ...

In another lean week top scorers, two names shot ahead from the pack to challenge the leaders - @tailzer and @harleymac1. Pulling off an impressive Brit-centric Minella to gain 6 points, @tailzer took second place in the overall standings. Well done sir! @harleymac1 also made impressive gains with his 6 point Minella.

File this one under stuff we couldn’t make up if we tried (although the fake press release would be awesome). Dorna Sports, media rights holder to our one and only MotoGP World Championship racing series, has been declared the “Best Spanish Business”…in Italy…by the Spanish Chamber of Commerce…in Italy…yeah it just got that weird. Apparently the Spanish Chamber of Commerce, which operates in Italy and helps facilitate business operations between the two countries, has made ...

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) -- Richard Petty will once again run his race team and participate in day-to-day operations as chairman of the new ownership group that was announced Monday.

The assets of Richard Petty Motorsports have been sold from George Gillett Jr. to an investment group that consists of Petty, Medallion Financial Corp. and DGP Investments.

"Today is a great day for me, my family, our fans and our wonderful sponsors," Petty said in a statement that listed 10 partners that "have supported me through thick and thin and I thank them from the bottom of my heart."

RPM will field cars for AJ Allmendinger and Marcos Ambrose in 2011.

The transfer of assets has been in the works for several weeks because of Gillett's ongoing financial problems. Debt-laden English soccer club Liverpool recently was sold despite the objection of Gillett and business partner Tom Hicks. And a U.S. hedge fund is suing Gillett over what the firm says is more than $117 million in debt he racked up investing in Liverpool.

During Peter Lenz?s racing career he was blessed to have the support of his family and the best safety and training equipment to be found. In 2009, Peter donated several hundred dollars of his own money to ?Ethan Gilliam?s Chasin a Dream Program? to allow fellow youth racers to receive chest protectors for free. Following Peter?s example, the Forever 45 fund will protect youth riders on an annual basis in honor of Peter Lenz.

Jeremy Burgess and crew are reportedly having a meeting with Ducati Corse in Bologna this week in order to discuss and finalize the basic outline for the Ducati Desmosedici GP11. The biggest question on the agenda is whether to use the “Screamer” or “Big Bang” motor for next year. Other items likely to be discussed include the weight balance of the GP11 (something we already saw Burgess and Rossi working on in Valencia), and the ...

According to Motovan and MV Agusta, import levels in 2011 will be extremely limited for Canada, and serious buyers will have to reserve their motorcycle online if they want ...
